Since venturing overseas in 1996, Huawei now has a multinational market network and international R&D platform with business operations in over 170 countries and regions, provides services for 45 of the world’s top 50 telecommunications operators and covers a third of the planet’s population. But despite its success, Huawei has gone through a series of setbacks in the U.S. market. This case focuses on two M&A failures. Through an analysis of Huawei’s North American strategy, it examines lessons learned. In October 2012, Huawei was forced to withdraw from the U.S. telecom equipment market altogether after U.S. Congress investigations. Why did this happen and what can be done about it?
