With generous support from the Li Ka Shing Foundation, philanthropy is part of the school’s DNA and core responsibility since its establishment in 2002. CKGSB’s vision is to influence the Chinese business community, advocate corporate social responsibility, and find new initiatives in philanthropy in order to promote social change. CKGSB’s mission is to build the most influential, campus-led philanthropy platform in China. We want to help students, alumni and the greater Chinese business community better understand philanthropy so that they can promote social change through their work.
CKGSB requires all EMBA students to complete 48-hours of community service before graduation. Since 2009, over 2,500 students have served more than 120,000 hours in their local communities.
CKGSB provides alumni with various platforms to engage in corporate social responsibility. We encourage students to be actively involved in NGOs that are linked to education, disaster relief, poverty alleviation, aiding the disabled community and environmental projects.
The CKGSB Foundation has raised over 50 million CNY and has carried out a series of public projects.
CKGSB seeks to build a bridge between the east and the west on innovative philanthropic ideas and initiatives by working with partners to look for solutions to social problems across the globe.
First Philanthropy Course Offered by a Business School
In 2014, CKGSB was the first Chinese business school to develop a philanthropy course aimed at equipping the school’s alumni with expertise on setting up and managing foundations and engaging in philanthropy.
CKGSB has been awarded the 2019 China Social Impact Award in “Poverty Alleviation” by the British Chamber of Commerce in China and United Nations for its positive impact and efforts in reducing poverty in China. The awards were handed out across seven categories from a field of more than 250 companies and organizations competing in total.
Philanthropy has always been part of the DNA of CKGSB. The Cheung Kong Education Development Foundation (CKEDF), an officially registered non-public offering foundation with Shenzhen municipal civil affairs bureau, is established with missions to support the sustainable development of CKGSB, to support the development of alumni, and to work for the betterment of the society.
CKEDF passes on CKGSB’s public welfare spirit. It supports the school and its alumni with an efficient, professional and transparent platform on which philanthropic projects in areas including education, science and technology, healthcare, poverty alleviation, juvenile development and environment protections are carried out.
By offering a full-tuition philanthropy scholarship, these programs aim to encourage young leaders who are socially responsible to contribute to social development.
During a trip to the Gobi Desert Challenge in 2015, a group of CKGSB professors, alumni, students and staff voluntarily help the local villagers sell their unique local Goji berries using innovative business strategies to design, market, distribute and sell their product, raising the annual income of all in the community by nearly 35% and helping lift them out of poverty in a dignified way.
