Another sizeable contingent of students from INCAE Business School in Costa Rica visited Beijing for a week-long program of lectures, company visits and networking activities – and went away very satisfied!

53 students from NYU Stern traveled to Beijing this month for an intensive one-week China module program as part of their EMBA program, which was held at CKGSB. The week included a number of highlights showcasing both modern and ancient China through the dual contexts of business and culture.

Close to 600 senior participants and media attended the CKGSB-HKS 2nd Annual Global Symposium — A New Business Civilization — following on from last year’s inaugural symposium held at Harvard, itself a product of a five-year collaboration between the two schools. Nine academics from universities such as CKGSB, Harvard and Oxford joined more than a dozen speakers from the business community to shed light on sustainable entrepreneurship.

CKGSB’s 10-year partnership with University of Virginia’s Darden School of Business is a wonderful event that continues to benefit both schools, said Teng Bingsheng, Associate Professor of Strategic Management at CKGSB and the Associate Dean of CKGSB’s European Campus.

China’s real estate market, often depicted as headed for a sharp downturn, is in fact in very good shape, a leading Hong Kong entrepreneur told a full gathering of senior executives at CKGSB’s New York office.

CKGSB played host to the Dong-A Economic Leaders’ Academy (DELA) Global Networking Program for the fourth time in Shanghai recently. In partnership with CKGSB, Korea’s leading media Dong-A have offered the program to foster international exchanges among economists and deepen understanding of the Chinese economy.

It is against this backdrop that WPP organized the BrandZ Top 100 Most Valuable Chinese Brands forums in Beijing and Shanghai, on March 21 and 24 respectively, in partnership with the Cheung Kong Graduate School of Business (CKGSB).

The recent annual gathering of China’s two parliamentary bodies, known as ‘Lianghui’, recently concluded in the capital, with topics including the economy, Internet Plus and access to education all being discussed. CKGSB professors share their views on some of the hottest topics.

CKGSB’s pioneering Understanding China’s Next Move course is back by popular demand, with this year’s program centering on the concept of innovation and entrepreneurship, areas that have become central to the government’s future strategy.

Companies that have spent months being feted by the media don’t tend to revise down their sales target, but in March Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi did just that—from 100 million units set in December 2014 to 80-100 million. Rival Chinese brand Huawei overtook Xiaomi in the third quarter as China’s top smartphone vendor. It’s a reality check for the upstart vendor, which soared to fame and a $45 billion valuation in less than five years as China’s first-time smartphone buyers snapped up handsets at a furious rate. But Xiaomi isn’t the only one hurting from the smartphone market slowdown in China.

CKGSB Professors Teng Bingsheng and Zhou Chunsheng addressed the importance of knowledge in meeting the challenges and opportunities that China is facing, during their respective sessions at the 16th World Knowledge Forum (WKF) in Seoul.

“Our achievements are enormous, but we still have huge challenges ahead. As representatives of China’s business elite, how should we behave going forward?” This question is at the heart of a “new business civilization” advocated by CKGSB Founding Dean Xiang Bing. Declaring that “our responsibilities and talents, including our energy, progress, stability, strength, wisdom and sense of harmony, are increasingly important to business and societal developments,” Dean Xiang, Professor of China Business and Globalization, expressed his hopes for CKGSB alumni and students at the 2015 Fall Graduation and Opening ceremony.

A select group of next-generation global business leaders completed the inaugural 2015 iLEAD program’s 10-day China Module recently, experiencing unparalleled international networking opportunities, world-class academic discussions, interactive panels with select executives, visits to leading Chinese companies and practical hands-on learning opportunities.

In an interview with Korean media outlet Chosun Biz, CKGSB Associate Dean Teng Bingsheng provided helpful insight about current trends and the market situation for successful businesses in China. He also suggested solutions for Korean companies to survive amid intensifying global competition.

“Docu One”, one of the most popular documentary programs on Korean Broadcasting System (KBS), aired a four-part series on the changes taking place in second and third-tier cities in China. CKGSB was represented through interviews with Professor Teng Bingsheng and business investment columnist Jeong Jooyoung, a CKGSB alumnus.

Members of CKGSB’s European Advisory Board explored China’s stock market, One Belt One Road, cultural clashes between countries, Chinese investment into Europe and many other topics in a fascinating panel discussion.

CKGSB Professor Teng Bingsheng’s case study about Xiaomi’s strategic advantages and disadvantages has been published in the Dong-A Business Review, Korea’s equivalent of the Harvard Business Review.

June 4 marked the completion of the third Dong-A Economic Leaders’ Academy (DELA) Global Networking Program, which was held at CKGSB’s Beijing campus. Together with CKGSB, Korea’s leading media Dong-A offers the DELA Program to foster international exchange among economists and deepen understandings of the Chinese financial market. Participants of the DELA Program, which comprised of senior executives of Korean enterprises received certificates from CKGSB.
