Amid criticism that business schools lack relevance when it comes to real-life business management practices, Associate Professor of Strategic Management Teng Bingsheng tells The Edge Singapore how CKGSB is keeping business-school curricula up to date and also highlights why leading faculty are returning to China to join CKGSB.

On July 16th, along with Teng Bingsheng—CKGSB Associate Dean and Associate Professor of Strategic Management—two CKGSB alumni Mr. Chik Wai Chiew, Partner at Tembusu Partners, an award-winning private equity firm focusing on emerging markets and China and Mr. Mao Jihong, President of Mixmind Art & Design, one of the most successful fashion brands in China, shed light on struggles for MNCs and where the opportunities lie in China at the first CKGSB Workshop in Singapore.

Along with President Xi Jinping’s recent visit to Korea, the hype surrounding Korean companies entering the Chinese market continues to grow. CKGSB Associate Dean and a world-renowned scholar on Strategic Alliance, Professor Teng Bingsheng, said that the Chinese market has experienced significant changes over the years. He pointed out that MNCs will face difficulties in winning the competition with local Chinese companies. Professor Teng said, “MNCs should not be satisfied with their standards. Because China is no longer a cheap consumption market, global companies should apply high standards in China and target customers with high-end products, not low-end ones. They also need to change their strategies to adapt to the new business environment in China. For example, they need to target the fast-rising, middle-class consumers and transform themselves from labor-intensive to technology-intensive companies”.

Several global companies are making a series of U-turns from the ‘promised land’ of China, while those that stay are not always faring well. However, the Chinese economic recession doesn’t explain how some global companies have continued to manage successful businesses in China. CKGSB Associate Dean, Professor Teng Bingsheng, who visited Korea on June 19th to introduce the CKGSB-IMD Dual EMBA Program, said: “Until the 1990s, multinational companies (MNCs) were considered by young Chinese people the best companies to work in, which unfortunately is no longer true. It’s also true that many global companies who have been successful over the last 25 years are now struggling in the Chinese market. The ‘Chinese Dream’ is becoming even harder to achieve”. Prof. Teng also pointed out that high competition with local companies could be another threat to MNCs and warned that some companies are still not aware of the changes in perceptions among Chinese consumers. He advised global companies to target emerging (Tier 2-4) cities and rising middle-class consumers.

In the days, weeks and months following its IPO filing, Alibaba will be the center of attention throughout not only the technology universe, but also those interested in learning about Jack Ma and his path to building one of the world’s largest e-commerce empires. Teng Bingsheng, Professor of Strategy Management at CKGSB, recently spoke to Bloomberg about how Jack Ma turned a vision into reality. 

On Monday, April 14th, CKGSB held a press conference at its Beijing campus to promote its recently-launched Dual Degree Executive MBA Program, in partnership with Switzerland’s leading business school, IMD. Deans of both business schools attended, and reiterated the merits of the program.

CKGSB has made a great leap in becoming one of the best business schools in China. CKGSB’s world-class faculty is also highly reputed. CKGSB Professor Teng Bingsheng, who visited Seoul to make a keynote speech at the ‘2014 Asian Leadership Conference’, said that proper strategic alliance such as ‘Strategic Investor’ relations between Korean and Chinese companies could enhance both countries’ key industries.

Chinese companies are actively pursuing M&A to enhance their dominance in the overseas industry and predominate the domestic market. Last year, overseas M&A of Chinese companies grew more than 200%. In an interview with Fortune Korea, Teng Bingsheng, CKGSB Associate Dean, forecasted that the large-scale M&A will actively take place over the next 10 years. He explained that this trend will help companies shorten the market entry process to global standards by accumulating R&D capabilities”.

For Korea, China is often referred to as ‘the land of opportunity’ due to its high growth potential and geographical advantage. Many Korean firms have already entered the Chinese market, yet the fate of each aspiring business is fairly differentiated. CKGSB Associate Dean and Professor Teng Bingsheng is one of the most prominent academics and experts in global strategic alliance. In an interview with Hankyung Business, Professor Teng shared his valuable opinions on business characteristics of Chinese companies, Korean companies’ market entry in China and key M&A strategies.

China's commerce minister is confident Beijing will hit its 7.5% growth target in 2014. While CKGSB professor Bingsheng Teng believes the country can meet that target, he tells Ramy Inocencio of Wall Street Journal why the fluctuation of the yuan could derail growth.

“Copycat strategy has led the Chinese industrial innovation”, said CKGSB Professor Teng Bingsheng at the 5th Asia Leadership Conference on March 4th in Seoul.
