Despite concerns of the sell-off in emerging markets stocks, China’s slowing growth and the US-China trade war, Silicon Valley’s most notable investors stayed bullish on investment opportunities. On August 31, Cheung Kong Graduates School of Business’s Chuang Community hosted Helen Liang, Managing Partner of FoundersX Capital, Ram Parameswaran, Partner of Altimeter Capital, and Luis Guilherme Ronchel Soares, Founding Partner of Nucleo Capital spoke of the future on investment trends at a talk titled, “China, US, India, Brazil: Global Outlook for Investment Trends and Opportunities” in Beijing.

Now in its ninth year, this high-level forum will showcase speakers from across government, academia and the private sector and will host sessions on fintech, AI & blockchain, retail and entrepreneurship. CKGSB’s Founding Dean Xiang Bing, Professors Liu Jing and Zhang Weining and Assistant Dean Ji Bo will each deliver keynote speeches.

US-China Business Council (USCBC) President John Frisbie will share viewpoints from Washington, USCBC advocacy priorities and perspectives on the trajectory for US-China commercial relations under the Trump Administration, before engaging in a dialogue with Prof Liu Jing, finance professor at CKGSB, and a Q&A session with the audience.

CKGSB and Harvard Kennedy School (HKS) are again collaborating to host the 2nd Annual Global Symposium — A New Business Civilization — in Beijing, following on from last year’s inaugural symposium held at Harvard at which more than 150 top business leaders attended.

CKGSB Associate Dean Liu Jing said China still remains a ‘Blue Ocean’ in Asia, as it has plenty of long-term growth potential by promoting domestic consumption and encouraging innovation within the business community, at an international forum hosted by Korea’s largest media group Chosun Media Group.

VIPKID, CKGSB MBA alumna Cindy Mi’s start-up that aims to help children in China to learn English through teachers in North America, has been backed by Bryant Stibel, which was cofounded by Kobe Bryant & Jeff Stibel. This marks Bryant Stibel’s first ever investment in education, as well as the firm’s second investment in China.

Close to 600 senior participants and media attended the CKGSB-HKS 2nd Annual Global Symposium — A New Business Civilization — following on from last year’s inaugural symposium held at Harvard, itself a product of a five-year collaboration between the two schools. Nine academics from universities such as CKGSB, Harvard and Oxford joined more than a dozen speakers from the business community to shed light on sustainable entrepreneurship.

The recent annual gathering of China’s two parliamentary bodies, known as ‘Lianghui’, recently concluded in the capital, with topics including the economy, Internet Plus and access to education all being discussed. CKGSB professors share their views on some of the hottest topics.

CKGSB Professor of Marketing Juliet Zhu headlined an impressive line-up of speakers from leading global and Chinese companies, who convened in Shanghai to discuss China’s new digital economy, with big data and the government’s Internet+ strategy revolutionizing the industry.

“Our achievements are enormous, but we still have huge challenges ahead. As representatives of China’s business elite, how should we behave going forward?” This question is at the heart of a “new business civilization” advocated by CKGSB Founding Dean Xiang Bing. Declaring that “our responsibilities and talents, including our energy, progress, stability, strength, wisdom and sense of harmony, are increasingly important to business and societal developments,” Dean Xiang, Professor of China Business and Globalization, expressed his hopes for CKGSB alumni and students at the 2015 Fall Graduation and Opening ceremony.

During an interview with Chosun Biz, one of most influential business media in Korea, Professor Liu Jing pointed out that the reason for the current market crash is quite different from former financial crises in 2002 and 2008, since the backdrop of problems can be traced to the boom of margin trading, including short sellers.

In an interview with Seoul Economy Daily, CKGSB Associate Dean Liu Jing emphasized that Asian economic integration is not a choice, but a necessity in today’s world. Given the economic competition between the US and China, Prof Liu said emerging countries need to build a cooperative model that is balanced, rather than solely serving each nation and creating intense competition.

In 2014, CKGSB and its world-class faculty were mentioned in more than 300 original articles in top-tier international media – a staggering 200% increase over 2013 – and that’s not to mention a whole range of additional coverage through reprinted articles and syndicated material.
