With China’s booming stock market making global headlines on a daily basis, it was no surprise that CKGSB’s “Investment Opportunities in China” session was one of the most popular parts of the recently-held Asian Leadership Conference (ALC), one of Asia’s largest conferences. CKGSB Professor of Finance Gan Jie headlined the session in Seoul, Korea, and she was joined at the event by CKGSB alumnus Li Chi, CEO of Co-Power Capital Management, Frank K. Tang, CEO of FountainVest Partners and Lee Sangyun, CEO of the Beijing branch of Korea Investment & Securities.
As the first global business school to partner with the ALC, CKGSB is the first company or school ever to brand a session at the conference, thanks to three years of close cooperation and communication between CKGSB and Korean media outlet Chosun Ilbo. More than 2,000 people from all around the world, including C-level and senior executives of industrial and financial companies, senior government leaders and officials, scholars and students took part in this year’s conference.
Professor Gan gave a presentation entitled “China’s stock market: opportunities and trends” to start the session. She highlighted opportunities in arbitrage and advised against taking risks before the current boom is over.
The talk was followed by a panel session with Li Chi, Frank K. Tang and moderator Lee Sangyun. Various subjects were covered, including the effect of the Chinese government’s financial policies on hedge funds; concerns about bubbles and the influx of speculative capital into the Chinese stock market; and features of the market that must be considered by Korean companies. At the end of the session, the panelists further shared their knowledge, answering insightful questions posed by those in the audience.
The Asian Leadership Conference, hosted by Chosun Ilbo, is Korea’s premier international conference, where global leaders come together to discuss and provide possible solutions for the pressing issues that Asia is facing today.
The 6th Asian Leadership Conference began with a welcome speech by Korean President Park Geun-Hye and included keynote addresses by Jack Ma, Executive Chairman of Alibaba Group and Chuck Hagel, Former US Secretary of Defense. Other notable speakers who attended this year’s ALC were Ban Ki-moon, Secretary-General of the United Nations, Horst Köhler, Former President of the Federal Republic of Germany and Murayama Tomiichi, Former Prime Minister of Japan.
