ABOUT THE SPEAKERS
 

Rory MacFarquhar

Rory MacFarquhar joined the Peterson Institute for International Economics as a visiting fellow in February 2016. In the previous six years, he worked in the Obama administration, and most recently served as special assistant to the President and senior director for global economics and finance in the White House National Security Council and National Economic Council. At the White House, he led policy teams working on a wide range of international economic and trade issues, including US-China economic relations, economic support for Ukraine, Tunisia and Iraq, and addressing global economic vulnerabilities. MacFarquhar helped prepare for President Obama’s participation at the G20 summits in St. Petersburg, Brisbane and Antalya. Before entering the US government, he worked for eight years at Goldman Sachs in Moscow, most recently as managing director and director of economic research for Central and Eastern Europe, the Middle East and Africa. He has a BA from Yale University, an MSc from the London School of Economics and worked towards a PhD at Harvard University.

Cobb Mixter

Cobb Mixter advises companies on their China strategies, most recently with the Alcoa Corporation in New York City. He was previously an International Affairs Fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations in New York and was Managing Director for China Operations and Deputy Assistant Secretary for legislative affairs at the US Department of the Treasury. He was also the senior staff member with responsibility for East Asia and the Pacific at the US House of Representatives, Committee on Foreign Affairs. Prior to his government service, he was an Asia analyst in the Business Intelligence Group at Lehman Brothers and a Research Associate for Asia studies at the Council on Foreign Relations. Mr. Mixter is a graduate of the Johns Hopkins-Nanjing Center for Chinese and American Studies and holds a Masters degree in Chinese studies from the University of London, School of Oriental and African Affairs. He is a board member of the US-China Strong Foundation.  

JC de Swaan

JC de Swaan is a lecturer in the economics department at Princeton University where he teaches courses on Asian capital markets and on ethics in finance. He also teaches at the Judge Business School at the University of Cambridge. Separately, he is a Partner at Cornwall Capital, a multi-strategy global investment fund based in New York. Prior to Cornwall, he was a senior advisor on China at a global macro fund, an investment professional at an Asia-dedicated hedge fund, and a management consultant at McKinsey & Company. He received his BA from Yale University, an MPhil in International Relations from the University of Cambridge and a Master’s in Public Policy from Harvard University. He is a Member of the Council on Foreign Relations.
