
Martin Matter has a degree in History and Political Science. After working as a journalist, he joined the Swiss diplomatic service in 1997. He participated in various multilateral negotiations, including disarmament and arms control (2000-2003) and served as Counsellor to the Swiss Ambassador to Peru (2003-2006). He then acted as Regional Coordinator for South and Central America at the Political Directorate of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (2006-2008), and went on to become Director of the Swiss Business Hub Brazil in São Paulo, with the title of Deputy Consul General (2009-2013). He then joined the Swiss Permanent Mission to the United Nations in Vienna and represented Switzerland at the United Nations Industrial Development Organization and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (2014-2017). As Head of the Economic Affairs Section in the Political Directorate of the FDFA (2017-2022), he was involved in strategic planning and controlling of Switzerland’s trade and investment promotion, led the development of a national anti-corruption strategy and represented Switzerland in the G20 Anti-Corruption Working Group. In September 2022, he assumed a new post as Head of the Economic and Financial Section at the Embassy of Switzerland in Beijing.
