On June 4, Founding Dean Xiang Bing’s special lecture, co-hosted by CKGSB and aSSIST (a Seoul School of Integrated Sciences & Technologies), was held successfully in Korea. Pollution is fast becoming one of China’s most serious issues, with worrying statistics circulating about the effect of pollution on life expectancy. But beyond the health risks, what are the financial costs of pollution on a country’s manufacturing sector? A ground-breaking new study has measured the effects of air pollution on labor productivity for manufacturing firms in China. CKGSB professor Brian Viard, one of the study’s co-authors, will present this data in public for the first time, explaining the rigorous methodology behind the calculations and revealing exactly how much China’s GDP is affected by different levels of pollution.

China and India are by far the world’s most populous nations, with both nations seeing enormous growth opportunities and a thriving start-up scene. But while China’s economy has grown faster in recent decades and is now more than five times the size of India’s, China has now entered a different phase of growth, while India’s economic growth seems set to ramp up. Featuring a dynamic line-up of experts, this event will compare and contrast the start-up economies in China, which has four of the world’s top 10 most valuable start-ups, and India, home to ten unicorns, where author Alan Rosling argues that early stage business is set to play a major role in transforming the economy as a whole.
