ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Professor Brian Viard
CKGSB Associate Professor of Strategy and Economics, Academic Director for MBA
V. Brian Viard moved to Beijing in 2007 to join the faculty of Cheung Kong Graduate School of Business (CKGSB). Prior to that, he was a professor at Stanford Graduate School of Business. Professor Viard’s research focuses on industrial organization economics and the economics of strategy. He has studied the pricing and product strategies of firms in information and technology industries, including the role of product upgrades and complementary goods. In the telecommunications industry, he has examined how entry into local telecommunications markets affects consumer welfare and how competition in cellular phone markets influences technology adoption and pricing. He has also studied whether switching costs make markets more or less competitive and the effectiveness of reward programs in creating switching costs.
Professor Viard’s recent work focuses on the determinants of Internet adoption, including provider competition and availability of content. He is also currently examining the economic effects of air pollution in China and the effect of university satellite campuses on educational quality. Professor Viard teaches courses on competitive strategy, managerial economics, and information goods markets and is the recipient of CKGSB’s inaugural M.B.A. Best Teaching Award. He received his Ph.D. in Business Economics from the University of Chicago.
Mr. Weijie Yun

Weijie Yun is the Founder and Managing Partner of Tyche Partners. As a serial entrepreneur, Weijie brings deep industry domain knowledge to identify investment opportunities and hands-on operating experience to help portfolio companies to grow their business.
Weijie’s passion is to identify and invest in entrepreneurs with disruptive technologies in hardware systems, such as IT infrastructure (big data, storage and networking), IoT and wearable devices, 3D printing, autonomous driving, consumer electronics, and semiconductor. Currently, he is serving as a board member/observer at Ambiq Micro, Crossbar, Latticework, mCube, Motiv, Qumulo and Kolo Medical. His other investments include Formlabs and Team Curis Group.
Before founding Tyche Partners, Weijie was a serial entrepreneur with a proven track record of combining his technical insights and market intuition to maximize companies’ value. He was the founder and CEO of Telegent Systems, AIP Networks and SiTek. He received his M.S. and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences from University of California at Berkeley.
Ms. Ruming Liu
Partner at Magstone Law
Ms. Liu has practiced corporate and securities law since 2002. Ms. Liu has extensive experience representing public and private companies and investment banks in corporate and finance matters. In her private company practice, Ms. Liu advises start-up and emerging growth enterprises from formation through acquisition or initial public offering in matters including venture capital financing, equity financing, operational compliance and technology development (including licensing, distribution and other technology transfer matters). She also represents venture capital firms and angel investors in their investments in start-up companies.
In her public company practice, Ms. Liu advises on both registered and unregistered securities offerings, executive compensation, mergers and acquisitions, corporate governance, periodic reporting and tender offers. Ms. Liu was the lead associate in the IPOs of SPT Energy, China Tianrun Cement and Daming International and has represented fortune 500 companies, such as Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. in its 51% increased investment in Yihaodian.
Prior to founding MagStone Law, Ms. Liu worked for Morrison & Foerster LLP in its Palo Alto, Los Angeles and Hong Kong offices and for Jun He Law Office in its Beijing office. Ms. Liu received her L.L.B (with honors) from Peking University Law School, her M.C.L from the University of Hong Kong Faculty of Law and her LL.M. from the University of Pennsylvania. Ms. Liu speaks English and Mandarin. Ms. Liu is admitted to practice in California, New York, and the United States Tax Court.
Ms. Xiaoyu Xu
Partner at Amino Capital
Dr. Sue Xu is Founding Partner at Amino Capital, and her focus areas of investment include data-driven healthcare IT, consumer software and hardware, drones, and enterprise services. She sits on the Board of Directors of YONO Health, and was interim CEO of CandyHouse and Techcode Innovation Center. Since 2012, she has been involved with more than 80 investments, such as Assemblage (acquired by Cisco – NYSE: CSCO), Orbeus (acquired by Amazon – NYSE: AMZN), Skycatch, Trustlook, and she is currently providing advisory to a number of fast-growing portfolio startups, such as Droplet, Skuchain, Koinify, Yttro, Mage and et.al.
Dr. Sue Xu began her early stage entrepreneurship when she was the founding scientist of GlycoMira (also involved in undergrad and Ph.D. laboratory spin-offs, including Carbylan BioSurgery, Sentrx Animal Care, Glycosan BioSystem, and Hair Regeneration project). She has three patents and more than 20 journal publications. Dr. Xu is a motivational speaker and a thought leader of women in entrepreneurship at international events and television shows. She was previously a postdoc at Stanford University.

Ms. Kathryn Ullrich
Partner at Odgers Berndtson
Kathryn Ullrich is a Partner in Odgers Berndtson’s Silicon Valley office and a member of the Technology and HR Practices. She focuses on senior executive searches for major corporations and venture-capital-backed companies in software, systems and services, and has specific expertise in autonomous vehicle technology, cloud, cyber security, data analytics, Internet, IoT, and SaaS.
Prior to joining Odgers Berndtson, Kathryn spent nearly twenty years building her executive search practice at several firms including Heidrick & Struggles, Russell Reynolds Associates and her own boutique search firm. Earlier in her career, Kathryn worked in software product marketing at Siebel Systems (now Oracle), strategy consulting at Accenture, and engineering at GTE (now Verizon) and Motorola. She is the founder of a Silicon Valley non-profit for women in technology and actively works with clients on increasing diversity in technology. Kathryn has a B.S. cum laude in electrical engineering from University of Michigan and an MBA with top honors from UCLA Anderson School of Management.
