Cheung Kong Graduate School of Business (CKGSB) co-hosted the 2nd ASEAN Business Research Initiative Seminar with Singapore Management University (SMU) on November 30th to showcase the research outcomes and promote academic exchanges between the two schools. The online event gathered dozens of professors and research fellows from both schools to discuss a wide range of topics from geopolitics, economics to CSR.
The seminar showcased four projects, two from each school, and invited their authors, including Huang Dashan, Associate Professor of Finance at SMU, Zhang Gang, Assistant Professor of Economics at CKGSB, Wang Rong, Associate Professor of Finance at SMU, Liang Hao, Associate Professor of Finance at SMU, and Na Ke, Assistant Professor of Accounting at CKGSB, to present their key research findings.
The event also invited some of its committee members to participate in the discussion, including Tan Hwee Hoon, Associate Professor of Organisational Behaviour & Human Resources at SMU, Huang Chunyan (Jennifer), Professor of Finance, Executive Academic Director for Executive MBA Program at CKGSB, and Brian Viard, Associate Professor of Strategy and Economics at CKGSB. The management groups from both CKGSB and SMU also participated in the discussion
In her opening remark, Tan from SMU said that she was, “very happy to be part of a movement to enable more [academic research focusing on ASEAN] so that we can have more evidence-based research that both practitioners and researchers can use”.
Viard from CKGSB said in his speech that the initiative has been funding a dozen pieces of projects across two schools since its establishment, and some of the earlier projects have been published in very prominent journals while case studies have been used in the classroom. “The initiative is already bearing fruit in terms of the objective.”
ASEAN Business Research Initiative (ABRI) was founded in 2016 by CKGSB’s Business Scholars Program and Singapore Management University, to support faculty research, facilitate student projects, and generate original insights into businesses operating in the ASEAN region. The initiative draws resources from both schools to understand ASEAN nations’ macro business environment, economies and institutions as well as management and innovation in their micro organization environment.
