As co-founder of CDHAI, Dr. Gao conducts cutting-edge research at the intersection of digital technologies, analytics, artificial intelligence and health care. Dr. Gao oversees the center’s extensive research portfolio, which encompasses a broad range of digital health technology applications, including electronic health records, wearables and sensors, mobile technologies, machine learning and artificial intelligence, and social media data.
Dr. Gao has been recognized for his leading role in programs endorsed by U.S. President Biden, highlighted in the Biden administration’s Executive Order on the Safe, Secure, and Trustworthy Development and Use of Artificial Intelligence. He is a leading faculty in the AIM-AHEAD Program for AI Readiness (PAIR) program. The AIM-AHEAD program, part of the National Institutes of Health, is a pioneering initiative dedicated to fostering mutually beneficial partnerships and advancing the representation of underrepresented researchers and communities in the development of AI/ML models. He is also a principal investigator for the Data Science Training Core (DSTC) of AIM-AHEAD.
Before joining Carey, Dr. Gao was the Dean’s Professor of AI in Healthcare, Co-Director of the Center for Health Information and Decision Systems (CHIDS), and the Director of the Health Insights AI Lab, at the University of Maryland, College Park. Dr. Gao’s research interests include Big Data and AI in health care, health IT, and quality transparency. His research has been funded by NSF, NIH and AHRQ. Dr. Gao is a recipient of the NSF CAREER Award. He received his PhD from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, his Masters of Business Administration from the Tsinghua-MIT Sloan joint program, and his Bachelor’s of Science in Electrical Engineering from Tsinghua University.
