On the evening of February 2, 2016, Sinochem leaders met the board of Syngenta in Zurich so sign an acquisition agreement. The total transaction price was locked at USD 43 billion. On June 7, 2017, The acquistion was completed on June 7, 2017 following the delivery of the second and final payment. Syngenta then delisted according to relevant legal procedures. One of the world’s leading pesticide and seed industry companies was now part of the Sinochem family.
It is still too early for Sinochem to capitalize on Syngenta’s success. Another five or ten years will tell. Perhaps the standard for evaluating whether this merger will be truly successful is if it can become a strong pillar of China’s economic upgrade and global future.
