VIPKID, CKGSB MBA alumna Cindy Mi’s start-up that aims to help children in China to learn English through teachers in North America, has been backed by Bryant Stibel, which was cofounded by Kobe Bryant & Jeff Stibel. This marks Bryant Stibel’s first ever investment in education, as well as the firm’s second investment in China.

Close to 600 senior participants and media attended the CKGSB-HKS 2nd Annual Global Symposium — A New Business Civilization — following on from last year’s inaugural symposium held at Harvard, itself a product of a five-year collaboration between the two schools. Nine academics from universities such as CKGSB, Harvard and Oxford joined more than a dozen speakers from the business community to shed light on sustainable entrepreneurship.

Liu Jian, the Consul General for the People’s Republic of China in Los Angeles, and CKGSB Dean Xiang Bing were among those in attendance at the launch ceremony of CKGSB’s US West Coast Alumni Association, which also included an Innovation Forum.

The recent annual gathering of China’s two parliamentary bodies, known as ‘Lianghui’, recently concluded in the capital, with topics including the economy, Internet Plus and access to education all being discussed. CKGSB professors share their views on some of the hottest topics.

CKGSB Professor of Accounting James Ohlson looks back on his distinguished academic career and also gives some advice to those looking to make it in his field, as he celebrates becoming the 93rd member of the Accounting Hall of Fame.

“Our achievements are enormous, but we still have huge challenges ahead. As representatives of China’s business elite, how should we behave going forward?” This question is at the heart of a “new business civilization” advocated by CKGSB Founding Dean Xiang Bing. Declaring that “our responsibilities and talents, including our energy, progress, stability, strength, wisdom and sense of harmony, are increasingly important to business and societal developments,” Dean Xiang, Professor of China Business and Globalization, expressed his hopes for CKGSB alumni and students at the 2015 Fall Graduation and Opening ceremony.

During an interview with Chosun Biz, one of most influential business media in Korea, Professor Liu Jing pointed out that the reason for the current market crash is quite different from former financial crises in 2002 and 2008, since the backdrop of problems can be traced to the boom of margin trading, including short sellers.

In an interview with Seoul Economy Daily, CKGSB Associate Dean Liu Jing emphasized that Asian economic integration is not a choice, but a necessity in today’s world. Given the economic competition between the US and China, Prof Liu said emerging countries need to build a cooperative model that is balanced, rather than solely serving each nation and creating intense competition.

In a video interview with CCTV News, Professor of Accounting & Finance and Associate Dean of Administration at CKGSB, Liu Jing, discussed the current situation in China’s outbound investment, suggesting Chinese companies should expand globally to attract more business.

Prof. Liu Jing, CKGSB Associate Dean and Professor of Finance, emphasized the importance of the internationalization of the yuan, saying that it is essential for China to prosper as a global economic power, but cautioning that the full internationalization of the yuan is still a long way from happening due to political concerns.
