Next year, both the United States and China will experience significant changes in leadership. In the United States, Donald Trump will be inaugurated as the 45th president while in China, the 19th Party Congress will likely witness a large-scale leadership turnover as President Xi Jinping begins his second term with many of his proteges well-positioned in important decision-making bodies. Will US-China relations be better managed as a result of the personal characteristics and policies of these two leaders? Or will tensions and conflicts in the economic and security domains become even more pronounced?

Henry Kissinger has worked with and advised numerous generations of leadership in the United States and China. For this unique event, he and other participants will draw on their historical experiences and personal anecdotes to shed light on these precedent-setting leadership transitions and help explain how they might alter the US-China relationship in the years to come.
